Extension of the Hotel Madeira Panorâmico with the construction of 69 new rooms, restaurants, spa, indoor swimming pool and solarium.
The existing situation (a hotel divided into two sections linked by a bridge over the roadway ) created a peculiar urban setting, giving rise to a set of "dysfunctions" with regard to the running of the hotel. With the acquisition of an adjacent plot of land, this development was made possible and, together with the introduction of an indoor swimming pool and restaurant beneath the level of the solarium extension, reformulated the whole connection between the building and the urban surroundings. The opacity of the blank wall gave place to an "inhabited" façade, dominated by the presence of the two-storey solarium, which folds over the northern perimeter, reducing the volume of the building. A more "civilised" relationship was thus established between the building and the road, creating staggered levels that complement the inclination. The extension of the hotel allowed for the resizing of the public and service areas that had become inadequate within the existing establishment, namely with regard to the size of the swimming pool, solarium, restaurant and games rooms.

A situação existente (hotel fragmentado em dois corpos ligados por uma ponte que atravessa o arruamento) criava um cenário urbano singular, reflectindo-se num conjunto de “disfunções” no que respeita à gestão do estabelecimento hoteleiro. Com a aquisição de um novo terreno tornou-se possível esta operação, que conjugada com a introdução de uma piscina coberta e restaurante abaixo da cota da extensão do solário, reformulou toda a ligação que o edifício estabelecia com a envolvente urbana. A opacidade do muro cego deu lugar a uma fachada “habitada”, dominada pela presença de dois pisos de solário, que dobra no limite Norte desmaterializando o volume do conjunto. Estabeleceu-se assim uma relação mais “civilizada” entre o edifício e a rua, criando planos escalonados que acompanham a pendente. A ampliação do hotel permitiu redimensionar as áreas públicas e de serviço que se mostravam já deficitárias no estabelecimento existente, nomeadamente no que respeita à dimensão da piscina, solário, restaurante e salas de jogos.
