This project is included in the context of the various works of restoration which the Madeira University is pursuing on its premises at the Colégio dos Jesuítas and which, together with the church building, constitutes one of the sites of greatest heritage value of the city of Funchal.
The opportunity thus arose to open up the old portico located on the side of the building, facing the Rua dos Ferreiros and which, in the 19th century, had been used as the pupils' entrance and subsequently as the armoury gate, and would now become the University's main entrance. Leading off from this entrance, into a space formerly subdivided into various sections, a large hall was created that is simultaneously a space of distribution, reception and temporary exhibitions. Restoration and opening up of the arches of the 'pupils' cloister', connecting it to the hall, bestowed upon the new entrance an amazing luminosity, restoring its spatial grandeur which had been lost through successive interventions, both as a result of the military occupation and, later on, of the university itself.
Despite some of the contemporary solutions that had to be employed, the architectural project sought throughout to follow the strict and discreet criteria as befits a building of such high patrimonial value as the Colégio dos Jesuitas. This was achieved by adopting a strictly formal design resorting, necessarily, to the strands of timelessness contained in the contemporary solutions, a task not always easy and almost always polemic especially when dealing with our monumental past.

O projecto inseriu-se no contexto das diversas obras de recuperação que a Universidade da Madeira está a levar a cabo nas suas instalações do Colégio dos Jesuítas o qual, juntamente com a igreja, constitui um dos conjuntos de maior valor patrimonial da cidade do Funchal.
Surgiu assim a possibilidade de desentaipar o antigo pórtico existente na fachada da Rua dos Ferreiros que, tendo sido no sec. XIX entrada de alunos e posteriormente porta de armas, passou agora a entrada nobre da Universidade. Sucedendo a esta entrada, numa área que se encontrava aleatoriamente subdividida em diversos compartimentos, criou-se um grande átrio que é simultaneamente espaço de distribuição, atendimento e exposições temporárias. A recuperação e o desentaipar da arcaria do ‘claustro dos alunos’, ligando-o ao átrio, conferiu à nova entrada uma transparência surpreendente, restituindo-lhe a eloquência espacial perdida com as sucessivas intervenções resultantes da ocupação militar e, mais tarde, da própria universidade.
Não escamoteando a modernidade de algumas das soluções adoptadas, o projecto de arquitectura procurou sempre pautar-se por critérios de rigor e discrição que um edifício com o valor patrimonial do Colégio dos Jesuítas impunha. Fizemo-lo tendo sempre o cuidado de adoptar um desenho de grande contenção formal, isto é, explorando na modernidade das soluções a sua vertente intemporal, tarefa nem sempre fácil e quase sempre polémica quando lidamos com o nosso passado monumental.
