The University Library forms an integral part of the FCSH premises at Av. de Berna in Lisbon. The most exposed surface of the library building will be its southern façade. Almost totally made up of a blank wall layered with regular moulding, this façade defines a simple outline design that will become the northern horizon of the University's patio. Its austerity introduces a silent and neutral background to the striking disorder of the locality. The abstract character of the recesses, designed as continuous breaks, emphasises the horizontal dimension of this side of the building. Only the veranda of the reading room, in the form of a large square opening, detracts from the façade design and overrides the geometry of the horizontals, leading our gaze towards the underlying entrance canopy.
Biblioteca universitária integrada no conjunto das instalações da FCSH à Av. de Berna em Lisboa. A face mais visível do edifício da biblioteca deverá ser a sua fachada Sul. Constituída na quase totalidade por um pano de parede cego de cércea regular, esta fachada define um plano de contornos simples que passará a ser o horizonte Norte do pátio da Universidade. A sua austeridade introduz na gritante desordem do local um fundo silencioso e neutro. O carácter abstracto dos vãos, desenhados como rasgamentos contínuos, acentua a dimensão horizontal desta face do edifício. Só a varanda da sala de leitura, subtraindo ao plano da fachada um grande vão quadrado, transgride a geometria das horizontais chamando o olhar à pala de entrada que lhe está subjacente.
